Ophelia

A photograph of the silvery body of a fish, most likely a gar, floating on its side in grassy water. The fish’s body is curved in such a way that the green grass obscures its head and part of its tail.

Just as Shakespeare’s Ophelia looked merely to be asleep, this piscine reincarnation swayed delicately with the lapping waves as if of its own volition. Were it not for the reek, I would have thought it was alive, lying in wait.

We will never know the full story of how either delicate creature died—only that they both did so surrounded by greenery, and that there is reason enough to suspect foul play.
